Brian Laing is a Southern Tier entrepreneur, business owner, and community advocate whose career has been defined by building businesses, creating opportunities, and investing in the communities he calls home. As President of Laing Self Storage and The Lainger Group, he oversees a growing portfolio of operating companies and real estate investments focused on long-term growth, operational excellence, and community impact.
Through Laing Self Storage, Brian has helped build one of the largest privately owned and locally owned self-storage platforms in the Greater Binghamton market. What began with a small facility in Conklin, New York has grown into a regional storage company serving customers throughout Broome and Chenango Counties. Guided by a disciplined, long-term approach, the company has expanded through strategic acquisitions, development opportunities, operational improvements, and a commitment to providing clean, secure, professionally managed storage facilities.
Brian’s business foundation was built through his involvement with Laing Industries, a family-operated truck and trailer repair company established in 1970. The experience provided valuable lessons in operations, customer service, leadership, financial management, and long-term business stewardship. As opportunities within self-storage and real estate began to accelerate, Brian made the decision to transition away from his day-to-day responsibilities at Laing Industries to focus entirely on building Laing Self Storage and The Lainger Group. That decision allowed him to dedicate his efforts toward acquiring, developing, and operating self-storage, industrial outdoor storage (IOS), vehicle storage, and other specialty storage assets while pursuing a broader vision of creating scalable real estate platforms capable of generating long-term value.
As President of The Lainger Group, Brian leads the company’s acquisition, development, and investment strategy. The firm focuses on identifying under-managed, under-enhanced, and under-developed real estate opportunities where operational expertise, strategic capital improvements, technology integration, and disciplined management can create lasting value. Today, The Lainger Group’s portfolio includes self-storage, industrial outdoor storage & vehicle storage positioned for future growth.
Beyond business, Brian is deeply committed to philanthropy and community service. He is the founder and chairman of The Constance Foundation, established in memory of his aunt Connie, whose courageous battle with breast cancer inspired a mission of helping families facing similar challenges. Through Hockey 4 Hope, the foundation’s signature fundraising event, Brian has brought together former professional players, collegiate athletes, local businesses, and community members to support families navigating the financial burden of cancer treatment. What began as a small charity hockey game has grown into one of the Southern Tier’s most recognized community events.
A graduate of The Hill School and SUNY Oswego, where he earned a degree in Business Management and Finance, Brian’s entrepreneurial journey has taken him from New York to California and back again. Following college and a pursuit of competitive hockey, he relocated to Carlsbad, California, where he co-founded Athletes Edge, a sports performance training facility who trained the likes of Dave Roberts, Trevor Hoffman, Jon Parker, Milos Sarcev, Shawn White, Darren Woodson & Roy Williams. In 2006, he returned home to continue building upon his family’s legacy while pursuing new opportunities across business, real estate, and community development.
Recognized as a Central New York 40 Under Forty honoree, Brian has built a reputation for combining entrepreneurial ambition with a strong commitment to community leadership. His philosophy is straightforward: build great businesses, create opportunities for others, invest in local communities, and leave organizations stronger than you found them.
Above all else, Brian is a devoted husband to Meghan and proud father to Penelope, Capri, and Eva. Outside of his professional pursuits, he values time spent with family, whether at the lake, by the pool, or traveling to warmer destinations. Much of the Laing family’s calendar revolves around supporting their daughters’ athletic pursuits in field hockey and lacrosse.
